My name is Jenni...

…and I guess I should tell you a little about myself, and how I came to yoga.

I was born in Encinitas, California, and moved to Kona, Hawai’i when I was 10 years old. I grew up in environments that fostered open-mindedness, spiritual awareness, and unconditional LOVE… the Spirit of Aloha.

When I was younger, I spent most of my free time outside, at the beach or paddling outrigger canoe. I have always enjoyed being active. When I moved back to California after high school, I started going to the gym to satisfy my endorphin quota, but there was something lacking in just going through the motions of “working out”. In January, 2002, a friend of mine invited me to come to a Bikram Yoga class with her. I didn’t really know anything about yoga, so I assumed all yoga was pretty much the same. I was just hoping that it could help improve my poor, slouching posture.

My first Bikram class completely worked me! Long story short, from that point on, I was hooked. (Now, as a teacher, I hear my students say that all the time!) Not only did Bikram Yoga change me physically, but I began to break through a lot of emotional barriers as well. A few times I have come out of Camel Pose in tears. I tried a couple other types of yoga classes here and there, but at the time, Bikram was totally enough for me.

After 4 years of practice, I decided it was time to excel to the next level. So in Spring of 2006, I did the 9-week intensive Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. I mainly wanted to do it for myself, and initially I didn’t really intend to actually teach classes. But I entered the teacher training as one person, and emerged as someone completely metamorphasized, as it was the catalyst for many changes across the board in my life.

Under incredible mentors, I continued to gain confidence and evolve as a Bikram Teacher, and my practice accelerated too.

Three years, and several hundred classes later, I began to get curious about broadening my horizons. Through friends, I started trying other types of yoga classes, and it seemed like there was this weird friction between the Bikram world and other, more mainstream hatha yoga sects. As with most everything, I wanted to understand both viewpoints (not that there is ever only two!), and enhance my experience-base to grow both personally and as a teacher.

In Spring of 2009, with the encouragement of a great friend, I jetted off to Bali, Indonesia for my 200-hour Vinyasa Flow teacher’s certification, training under Jacqueline Heisel. It was an amazing and mind-expanding experience!

So now I figure it’s time to reach out a little further to share what I’ve learned along the way.
